Bound

16mm loop transferred to digital, 7 seconds, 2025

Vibrant colour flashes across the screen. Tendrils appear briefly before retreating out of frame.

In Bound, Hugo Max draws upon the ritual object of tefillin, reinterpreting its leather strap as analogous to the 16mm film strip. Wrapping analogue film around his bare arm in the dark room, the artist captures the moment of prayer via a spontaneous flash of light.

The result is a mapping of flesh, a dark-light patterning reminiscent of flame, treading the line between representation and abstraction.

Seven loops around the left arm – a passing illumination – a seven-second film.

Bound translates Hugo Max's structuralist prayer film into seven spreads of flesh-become-flame.
