The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) with Live Score | Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre

Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of the most influential films in cinema history. Set in a small German town during a carnival, the story follows a mysterious hypnotist who unveils his eerie attraction, a sleepwalker said to predict the future. At night, he awakens to carry out the hypnotist’s dark commands.

With its jagged, dreamlike sets and chilling atmosphere, the film redefined how stories could be told on screen, leaving an indelible mark on the evolution of horror, film noir and gothic cinema. Wiene’s expressionist visual language enters into conversation with Hugo Max’s exhibition of paintings The Stanley Series on display at Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre.

The Stanley Series | Robert Phillips Gallery | Private View

The Stanley Series is a picaresque fable comprising eight mixed media paintings by multidisciplinary artist Hugo Max. Depicting the tragicomic ventures of the titular character, the series distils the passions of a young painter and intertwines a desire for the grotesque with cartoonish glee.

This exhibition unites the series for the first time in dialogue with new works and events that expand upon the surreal world of the paintings.
